moment. and violent storms overnight that killed two in the south. what's ahead for your weekend? sam is tracking all of that. and a breakthrough in the baffling case of a missing louisiana coed, mickey shunick. police have made an arrest. we'll tell you what led them to the suspect. we're going to turn to the latest terror scare in london, just three weeks before the olympics are set to begin there. 7 people arrested this morning, bringing to 13, the total in the last 2 days. let's go to jeffrey kofman live in london with the latest. good morning, jeffrey. >> reporter: good morning to you, josh. this is what we know. police impounded a vehicle on a highway north of london, suspecting the driver didn't have insurance. when they searched it, they found firearms inside. in what is becoming almost a daily occurrence here in

england. the seven arrested this morning followed the six yesterday. they now know who it was that police were after when they knocked on this london house in an early-morning raid thursday. three brothers were arrested. and elsewhere, three others. one of them, a former bbc security guard. >> no longer will be muslims remain silent. >> reporter: and rails against britain's royals and military. another suspect, jahangir halon. >> police say they will act earlier on in a plot. >> reporter: which explains that bus pulled over yesterday on a road to london. turns out the smoke led to s.w.a.t. teams and hazmat suits were a false alarm. the passenger was smoking an electric cigarette.

security is already here. in the sky, on the water. mock emergencies on dry land. at this time last year, that british warship was on duty off the coast of libya. this month, it will be on olympic duty. part of the largest peacetime deployment in britain ever. >> there are men, equipment here, ready to protect them if any threat should arise. >> reporter: olympics are a security headache for any host city. the challenge in this huge international capital, where the streets and the subways are always crowded, may be the biggest so far. and don't be surprised, josh, to hear about a lot more arrests as the games approach. >> jeffrey kofman, in london. we appreciate you reporting. now, to the violent storms over the south overnight. killing two campers in the great smoky mountains national park. the rest of the country is battling the blistering heat. our extreme weather team is covering all of the angles.

let's begin with sam champion. >> good morning, amy. good morning, josh. our wave of weather continues. 475 storm reports, coming from those record temperatures. the amazing heat. this, by the way, each one of those dots represented one community that had damage from the winds, the hail, the lightning that came from these strong to severe storms. we found that the heat has been deadly. and the storms that come from them are deadly, as well. a series of violent thunderstorms slammed into eastern tennessee thursday, leaving a path of death and direction. two people are confirmed dead in the great smoky mountains national park. one woman died after being struck by a falling tree. and a man on a motorcycle was killed when he wiped out on a park trail. >> our first priority is safely getting our crews into those locations where they can assess

the injuries, treat and evacuate folks. >> reporter: nearly 60,000 people are without power in the storm zone. downed trees and debris damaged electric lines. winds so strong, they ripped a roof right off a building. >> first, it took the metal roof. then, it took the wooden roof. i come from the mississippi delta. we're used to tornadoes. but this was real freaky. >> reporter: officials say it could be days before power is fully restored. look at the damage. uprooted trees, on houses, blocking driveways, stranding residents. look how powerful the winds were at this minor league baseball park. rain pours at grounds keepers tried desperately to cover the field. it is difficult to say what part of this is more dangerous. if it's the continual heat or the storms that come from them. look at the temperatures and the

heat warnings and watches that are out. chicagoland, 102, maybe 103 again today. louisville, 105. and speaking of chicago, our alex perez is there to talk about once more just how long this area has been in this kind of heat. good morning, alex. >> reporter: sam, good morning to you. yesterday was the fifth-hottest day recorded in chicago. we got to 103 degrees. the previous record was 102 degrees in 1911. if we make it to 100 degrees today, it would be the third-straight day in a row that we had triple-digit temperatures. officials are checking on the elderly and those who might need the most help. so far, there are two deaths that have been linked to the heat here in chicago. but the good news is, there is relief in sight for many parts of the midwest. the high by sunday should be in the mid-80s. amy? >> alex perez, thank you. let's turn to weekend

anchor, dan harris, for the other developing stories this morning. >> good morning to both of you. turns out our long run of dropping gas prices may be coming to an end. prices are moving the wrong direction, rising an average of 2 cents in the past day. it's the first time prices have gone up since april. aaa is blaming the recent increase in crude oil prices. also this morning, we're expecting big economics news. the release of the jobs numbers for the month of june. the may number, you may remember, were terrible. can we do better this time? bianna golodryga is covering the story. >> reporter: good morning to you, dan. the economy and jobs are the top issue on voters' mind. and we get the latest look at employment numbers in a little over an hour. analysts suspect the economy added 100,000 jobs last month. a pretty weak number and not enough to put a pent in the unemployment rate. we expect to hear from mitt romney, on vacation in

new hampshire, as well as the president, as he campaigns in two swing states, ohio and pennsylvania. no president has won an second term with a jobless rate over 7%. >> 100,000, if the prediction holds. the man accused of killing trayvon martin has been given another chance to leave jail. but this time, the bail for george zimmerman is a lot higher. 1 million bucks. that was the sign that he did not like the statements of less than than he had. a woman is being held on suspicion off child abuse after police say she put beer in her toddler's sippy cup. she was pouring beer in the cup because her 2-year-old was reaching for the pitcher. sounds reasonable. from the ridiculous, to the more ridiculous.

usa, in an appropriate fashion today. and nicole, live from east town. >> local reporter, remaining very cool under pressure after this vicious attack by a neighborhood cat. nicole is now being treated for rabies. >> really? >> i'm making that up. >> it looked like a harmless cat. but a little scary there. her voice went up a couple octaves. we're going to move to the break in the case of the louisiana college student that went missing. mickey shunick went missing in may. they have arrested a former sex offe offender. bazi kanani is here. >> reporter: police are not revealing many detailsy et. but it appears the case is taking a sad turn for a family who hopes she would be found alive. a sex offender has been arrested and charged with murder.

overnight, police searched brandon le vergne's home. they charged the 33-year-old with first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in connection with shunick's disappearance. the 22-year-old college student was last seen on her bike around 2:00 in the morning on may 19th. >> my best friend. i just miss her. i want to know what's going on. >> reporter: overnight, police will not say how they connected lavergne to shunick's case. but they learned a silverado truck was registered to him. police released surveillance images of this white chevy pickup truck, seen on the same street, around the same time shunick was captured on her bike. a week later, fishermen found that bicycle 30 miles away, partially submerged in a river,

by this bridge on interstate 10. >> the bike, despite being in water, there is a potential of evidence from it. >> reporter: abc news has also learned lavergne is a registered sex offender in louisiana. records show he served eight years in prison. >> you can't charge somebody based on what they did in the past. you have to charge them with knowing what information and evidence you presently have. do they have a statement from him? do they have dna or fingerprint evidence that link him to mickey or to her bike? >> reporter: as 23450news of th arrest was announced thursday, residents who had been searching for shunick were crushed. shunick's family hired their own private investigator who came up with the suspect description. we will find out if lavergne was

that suspect. and more from police later on today. >> thanks, bazi. today, investigators hope to raise a yacht that capsized and sank off long island on the fourth of july. they're looking for more clues in the accident that killed three children. safety experts say the boat was overcrowded. and abc's john schriffen is here with the latest. this is such a sad story. >> reporter: it is a sad story and a holiday tragedy. we're hearing from one of the mothers who lost her daughter. she's speaking out on facebook saying, quote, three kids are gone for no fault but the weather and the walter. and this morning, we're looking at what happened immediately after the boat started to sink. >> where's my sister. >> reporter: the video shows a dramatic moment, immediately after the party boat began to sink. tossing most of its passengers overboard. as passengers screamed, nearby boaters desperately tried to pull people out of the water.

>> yo. get some people off the race boat on to the center console. now, guys. be smart. >> reporter: at one point, several passengers can be seen clinging to the side of the 34-foot yacht as it begins to go under. three children, 8, 11, and 12 years old, died when the boat capsized. they were later found inside the cabin. 24 people were eventually rescued from the water. this morning, police are still investigating what caused the massive boat to sink? >> the boat could have sunk for many reasons. it could be overcrowding. it could be a mechanical malfunction. >> reporter: the boat's operator says he saw lightning and then a rogue wave. >> two bolts. they were white. and it turned the boat around. >> reporter: richard has spent over 40 years boating on the water near oyster boy. he says large wakes can be formed when hundreds of boats can be leaving the area at the

same time. but he also believes too many people have been onboard. 27 people on a 34-foot boat. what does that say to you? >> that's overpopulated. >> reporter: again, investigators have not yet determined what caused the accident. they say they do not believe alcohol played a factor. but they have not ruled out charges against the operator and the owner. they plan to get back out on the water today and hopefully lift that boat out of the water and get some answers. we'll switch gears, now, to the mystery of the forbidden fruit. yes. when a tech-savvy office worker noticed that fruit was disappearing from his desk, he set up a web cam, trying to catch a thief. abc's david wright reveals what exactly was caught on camera. >> reporter: a video vigilante. taking revenge via web cam. angry that someone keeps

stealing fruit off his desk. >> they do look delicious. >> reporter: he catches the thief red-handed. cleaning lady, apparently helping herself late at night. our vigilante accuses the cleaning lady. then, keeps the cameras rolling to capture people's reactions. first, a co-worker. then, a janitor. finally, the alleged thief herself. the results, posted to youtube. a tidy little office whodunit. or not. hiding a camera in the office fridge will probably help you catch the person stealing your lunch. but be careful. you could end up in hot water, too. scroll down from the video and there's a debate over his tactics. some sympathetic. kudos to you for freaking her out. others are hostile.

i hope she sues the pants off you. the vigilante's story is similar to a break room bandit in a cop shot. but in that, the camera was set up in a sting. the thief, a local police officer, who was suspended for 30 days without pay. that didn't happen in this case. the guy didn't even report the cleaning lady. presumably, he figured youtube humiliation was punishment enough. for "good morning america," david wright, abc news, los angeles. >> no one's stealing your food, by the way. it's disgusting. >> oh. a little yogurt and cereal. >> it looksic can i. >> i have any eyes on you. we also have our eyes on sam champion. let's go back up to central park, where demi lovato is getting set to take center stage. >> we're going to talk about heat one more time today. we start stepping into the

temperatures in the east that made the heat wave. they haven't made the move yet. but they will today. watch this hot and humid air to make its way toward new york city. boston, 96 on saturday. philly, the triple-digit mark by saturday. washington, d.c., today is your start day. and then, yo uh get it tomorrow. sioux falls, green way, milwaukee, chicago. some of the storms will be a little bit. but when the storms break out in this kind of heat, you have to be concerned about how powerful the storms will be, as well.

relationship with katie holmes, it was reportedly very warm, at least up until the divorce filing. >> connor and bella were apparently very close to katie. she's talked about them in interviews. and there's even reports they were so close, they even called her mom sometimes. >> reporter: okay. so, we know from sources close to holmes, that her husband's devotion to scientology is one of the reasons she filed for divorce. it is possible, observers say, that holmes saw what happened to nicole kidman and her relationship to her children and she's making sure that doesn't happen to her and suri. here to talk about this, "people" magazine executive editor, j.d. hayman. so many issues here. connor and isabella, their relationship with katie. we heard it had been good until the point of filing itself. what happened here? >> clearly, they were all very close. i know that they did call her mom. they did have a warm family

relationship. and obviously, things have changed. we don't really know if they've had -- it seems as if they've had no contact with her since she's made the announcement. so, we'll have to see how that will play out. but it does, indeed, seem they haven't had much contact with her since it happened. >> they call her mom. a very sweet thing. but they have a mother in nicole kidman. what can you tell us about that relationship, which at least seems strained. >> i think people, in popular mind, thatay be true. they have joint custody. they are close to their father. they grew up in los angeles with their father. nicole kidman has seen her children over the years. relationships are complicated. and nicole kidman has spoken about that at length. they're trying to find their way to a family relationship. it's a divided family as all families do when they go through a divorce.

i'm not sure there's exact parallels, other than he's a famous person and been through two well-known divorces. >> maybe high-profile tea leaf reading. let's look at the relationship between tom and his daughter, suri. obviously, they were separated by an ocean and coast-to-coast, in the days since the filing. what do we know about that relationship now? >> we know tom has had regular contact with suri. they've spoken several times a day. we know they're in touch. we also believe from sources that bella and connor have not been in touch with katie. at the moment, we know that he's been allowed to talk to her. obviously, he loves his daughter. and she does, too. and i hope they both work that out. but he is in touch with her. >> again, question has continued, a matter of venue for the proceeding itself. is there any news to report at this point? >> not yet. they are trying to work that out. i assume that will be the main

now, disturbing, new details in a shocking love triangle and murder-for-hire case. the former mistress of jeffrey stern, said he ma lip nated her so she would hire hitmen to try to kill his wife. abc's ryan owens sorts out all of the sordid details. >> reporter: no one disputes what michelle gaiser did. she confessed to hiring three

hitmen to kill her lover's wife and is serving 25 years for it. why se did it is a another matter. she always said that jeffrey stern was the mastermind of it all. but in these documents in the civil case stemming from the murder attempts, gaiser details just how controlling he allegedly was. gaiser's attorneys call stern a puppeteer. claiming, he wanted his wife dead. and michelle gaiser was the victim he could emotionally manipulate to carry out his plan. he reportedly made her dress up in his wife's underwear and explain to him how his wife would be killed to turn him on. stern's attorney described the mistress as a liar. >> you're convinced your client had an affair with the wrong woman. >> he had an affair with a woman who developed a fatal

friday morning. for montgomery county residents dealing with storm will go door-to- door after all to pick up tree limbs and other debris. they will start doing that on wednesday. initially, county officials said residents would be removing large tree limbs. get them out on county-operated roadways. a new movie will be held called "ping-pong summer." was filmed and ocean city and begin filming in september. it is expected to take about six weeks at the end of the season. here's a look at traffic. >> will star with a live look an ongoing accident on the inbound toll road. this is eastbound on the toll in reston at wheeling avenue. the two left lines are blocked left lanely have one
